I remember seeing a Michael Moore TV programme some years ago that showed that 40m+ Americans were without health insurance and now there appears to be a charity clinic run by volunteers for those who can’t afford medical treatment and were desperate. I have a lot of respect for those volunteers, but I can’t help wondering why the 46m quoted in the programme aren’t covered by some sort of socially funded health service. Here in the UK, we get high quality health care free at the point of need; and those who prefer private insurance can get that too. In Euope in general, and in Australia, and I understand in Canada, they have some system that makes health care available to all. Why does the world’s richest and most powerful nation not take proper care of so many of its people. (I know a Conservative MEP talked the UK’s NHS down on US TV, but he isn’t representative of his own party, let alone people in the UK in general.) It seems to me that making people rely on charity for their health care humiliates and demeans them.
