I recently relocated to England from the States. I registered with a doctor, as did my husband. I am here on a work permit position, and he is here as a work permit dependant. He has not found work yet. I filled out a form at my job that was submitted as a fast-track application for a National Insurance number and was promised that once my National Insurance number arrived, I would not be paying emergency tax anymore. I received my NHS medical card in the mail, with NHS number and the job said that they needed the NI number for tax reasons. My husband also registered with the same surgery but didn’t get his NHS medical card. I am confused. Could someone clarify? I assumed that since my job fast tracked my National Insurance application, that this NHS medical card was the end result, because, as I said, my husband didn’t get one in the mail. This NHS number has ten numbers: xxx xxx xxxx The payroll department at my job said that the number they need has letters in it as well.

Also, once my National Insurance number arrives, how fast can I be taken off Emergency tax?

Thanks in advance.
