Motability was founded by the government in 1977and since then has supplied more than 1.7 million cars and powered wheelchairs to disabled customers.
Motability was originally set up in order to provide disabled people with safe, reliable and affordable mobility cars. The plan still exists whereby you are able to hire or buy a car, powered wheelchair or scooter if you qualify for Disability Living Allowance at the high rate mobility component. In caseas where more than one beneficiary is eligible to apply, it could be possible to put both allowances toward one Motability car. You can also apply for a wheelchair car if you are eligible but don’t drive yourself, parents or guardians are encouraged to apply on behalf of a child who is receiving mobility allowance provided the proposed drivers don’t have any major motoring convictions, endorsements or disqualifications within five years of applying. There are also restrictions applied to those drivers who are under 25 or hold provisional driving licenses. As well as providing money and help with buying or leasing a vehicle, Motability is also able to provide grants for driving lessons.
