Typical New Year resolutions include taking more exercise, planning to lose weight most folk fail to remember that improving your financial state of health can bring more statisfaction and happiness to your life.

A lot of people in this day and age – either through laziness confusion or forgetfulness, neglect to analyse their finances and examine where they can cut costs and spread their money further. Here are a few of the common services and products where you can save money by shopping around.

  • Insurance. Insurance companies offer insurance coverage for household contents, building and car insurance and there are now increasingly popular coverage illustrated by travel insurance and medical coverage. You can compare the sundry insurance plans offered by logging to a price comparison website, and in a matter of moments you could get a medical insurance quote that matches your needs.
  • Bank Accounts. Datamonitor recently released the results of their survey that had revealed that only 7% of current bank account holders have changed over their bank within the last year, compared with thirty nine percent of us swapping car insurer. If you do not generally go overdrawn each month, you want a current account providing the peak rate of interest with the lowest monthly charges. The majority of banks are thinking of setting up a daily overdraft fee as an alternative to a percentage charge. If you are habitually over your limit at the end of each month, these fees can add up. Quite a few banks are presenting enticements including cashbacks to entice us to sign up with them. Check out all your options before you transfer your account, it will be in the region of ten days to arrange all the paperwork but all of your standing orders and direct debits will change over automatically so so you won’t need to change each one yourself.
  • Credit cards. Change your credit card supplier on a regular basis, unless you are being rewarded for your loyalty with cashback, airmiles. A number of card suppliers give 0% balance transfer and waive purchase fees for a period of time. There are several charity credit cards, be cautious of these. When the initial donation made by the credit card supplier has been made, any subsequent payments made against your purchases is very small.
  • Council Tax. Check your property value. It is a common myth that in the past few years when house prices rose in huge amounts through the UK meant that in turn, your council tax increased because of these rising valuations. Council tax bands used 1991 as the year to base property values on, and you would be wise to make sure that your property is within the right tax band. If a neighbouring, identical property has recently sold see if you can find out the price and you could work out the assessed price in 1991 and work out your local council’s band from that sum. If subsequently, you find that you have overpaid then you could get the following year’s Council Tax changed to the correct rateband but you could also get a repayment on the charges that have been overpaid.

These changes will take time, but are worth it in the end.
